My panties are always wet. Is it normal?

 

Why are the panties always wet? Is it normal or is it a sign of something abnormal?

 

It is very common for many females to always have a wet panty. Most of the times, the vaginal discharge is considered normal. However, there are certain conditions in which the discharge is not normal.

You should carefully observe any abnormal vaginal discharge in terms of color or smell and consult immediately with your physician.

 

Consideration

 

Considering the normal anatomy and functions of the female genital tract, it is normal and healthy to be wet. Vaginal discharge starts at the onset of puberty.

 

It has the following functions:

 

  • Protects the vaginal tissues
  • Cleans out any dirt or foreign particles present in the vagina
  • Kills unsafe microorganisms  (the discharge is acidic in nature)
  • Promotes easy and healthy sex
  • Helps the sperm to reach the egg easily for fertilization

 

However, in certain cases continually wet panties may indicate an abnormality. Some of the causes of a continually wet panty are:

  1. Yeast infection:

    Yeast infection occurs due to fungal growth. The discharge on the panties looks like cottage cheese. The infection can also lead to itching around the vagina and burning sensation while having sex. Usually, the infection is not severe and can be managed easily. Topical creams prove to be effective in treating the itching and soreness.

  2. Bacterial infections:

    Excessive panties are always wet vaginal discharge can be caused due to bacterial vaginosis. The discharge is thin, grey coloured and smells like a fish. It also causes itching around the vagina. Having multiple sexual partners and frequent douching are the common causes of bacterial infection. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection.

  3. Sexually transmitted disease (STD)

    : Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are the two most common sexually transmitted diseases that can cause panties are always wet an abnormal amount of vaginal discharge. Chlamydia is also associated with itching and burning sensation. Gonorrhoea causes yellow coloured discharge along with itching, burning, redness and swelling of the vagina and other organs of the genital tract. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to treat STDs. Antibiotics are usually given to both the partners.

  4. Forgotten tampons:

    You may experience excessive vaginal discharge with foul odour from a tampon that has remained in your vagina for a time longer than recommended (less than 8 hours).The easiest way to manage this is by removing the tampon.

  5. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

    : PID is a bacterial infection of the reproductive organs. The bacteria can get transmitted sexually or while inserting an intrauterine device (IUD), which is not clean. There is a heavy, foul-smelling discharge from the vagina. Antibiotics are the mainstay of treatment for PID.

  6. Birth control pills:

    The birth control pills mainly contain hormones, especially estrogen. Estrogen causes an increase in the vaginal discharge. An easy way to control this heavy discharge is to opt for progesterone birth control pills.

  7. Cervical cancer:

    Cancer of the cervix can occur due to infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus is commonly transmitted while having sex. It is important to get routine pap smears to help in early detection of cervical cancer.
