What is Abortion by Medicines? What does it involve?

Medical abortion involves clearing the pregnancy with the help of tablets. In India it is a legal to use medicines till seven weeks of pregnancy but many countries use it comfortably till nine weeks of pregnancy.

You need to come to the clinic on two or three different days. On the first visit, a single tablet is given to stop the growth of pregnancy and on the second visit another set of tablets are given either as oral tablets or put in the vagina. These tablets help to expel the pregnancy by helping the uterus contract. The action of the medicines start within 4-6 hours and within 24 hours bleeding should start. If bleeding does not start within 24 hours of taking the full dose, please inform your doctor about the same as your body could be resistant to the action of these medicines. She will then inform you about the future course of action.

You are usually advised pain relief and some other symptomatic medications in case of need. The bleeding may last for a few days and varies in different people. If the bleeding is unusually heavy and you feel as if a small tap of blood has been opened and this heavy bleeding continues beyond 12-13 hours, you need to get in touch with your doctor immediately. Very rarely emergency hospital admission is needed for heavy bleeding or severe pain.

You would be called for a follow up visit after two weeks to confirm if the abortion process has been completed or not. In general if the bleeding continues beyond two weeks, there is a high chance that the abortion has not yet been completed.
