What happens after Pregnancy Termination?
After an abortion you would be usually kept under observation for one or two hours so that you recover comfortably from the effects of anesthesia. After that you can safely go home. It is preferable that you have a companion to go along with you.
You are given a written discharge summary with some prescription medicines like antibiotics, pain killers or any other medications that your doctor may feel that you need. It would also have a list of symptoms that if you have like fever, pain in your tummy, excessive vomiting, foul smelling discharge from the vagina etc., you should come back to the clinic for an urgent follow up visit.
You should also be given an emergency helpline phone number so in case you have problems like heavy bleeding at night, you should be able to call on that number and seek advice. A follow up visit is usually arranged two weeks from the time of abortion to check if everything is fine and to discuss contraception for future. It is advisable to come with your partner for this visit so if he has any question they can be answered simultaneously.
