Is it safe to have sex during pregnancy?

Sexual intercourse in a normal pregnancy is not known to be associated with any adverse outcomes during pregnancy. However if you have been bleeding or having any premature uterine contractions you may be advised to avoid sexual intercourse during this time.

During the first three months (trimester), nausea and vomiting may make you feel sick and not quite up to it. You must talk about your feelings with your partner so that he understands and is more patient. You can think of other means like just sleeping together, hugging, holding hands etc as an expression of intimacy.

The second trimester is the time when a pregnant woman is generally bubbling with energy. Sexual intercourse at this time is generally safe. In fact lot of couples admit that they enjoy sex more during this time because there is no risk of pregnancy…It has already happened…

During the last three months, the growing tummy may make it difficult to have penetrative vaginal sex. You may try different positions especially lying side by side. Sex during the last few weeks may marginally increase the chance of premature labour pains. In fact, in olden times midwives used to recommend sexual intercourse to a woman who was overshooting her expected date of delivery. If you have a past history of preterm births, then you should avoid relations around the time when labour pains started the previous time.
