What is surgical abortion and what does it involve?
Surgical abortion involves clearing the pregnancy with the help of a small suction machine which sucks the contents of pregnancy and cleans it.
You need to go to an equipped clinic or hospital which offer such a service and would be given an appointment for the same. Your doctor may give certain medicines to eat or keep in the vagina to start the abortion process. This helps to reduce injury to your uterus later on due to forceful opening of the cervix. You may be offered a choice of local or general anaesthesia depending on your preference. You should be able to discuss the kind of anaesthesia offered with your doctor.
You would be taken in to an operation theatre and made comfortable. After you have been given anaesthesia, your doctor gently stretches open the entry to the uterus (cervix) and insert a suction tube the uterus. The extent to which the cervix needs to be opened depends upon the duration of pregnancy. With the help of suction and forceps the contents of pregnancy are gently removed. An ultrasound done during this time increases the safety of the procedure and also makes sure that all of the pregnancy is removed.
After the procedure is over, you would be watched inside for a few minutes for any complication and then brought to the recovery room to rest and be observed for another 1-2 hours.
