My pregnancy test was positive and I want this baby but now I have started bleeding. what are my options?

Please visit your gynaecologist urgently and have an ultrasound scan done to check if the baby is ok or not. If the heartbeat of the baby is still there, your doctor may prescribe certain medications to safe guard this pregnancy.

If the pregnancy has miscarried, than a range of option is available. If the ultrasound scan tells us that the miscarriage is already complete, you will not need any more treatment in this situation.

If the miscarriage is incomplete than you may have to choose from three options:

a) Letting nature take its course is successful in 50 percent woman when the bleeding has already started. It may start slowly and bleeding can last four up to three weeks. An ultrasound is usually done to check after 2-3 weeks if everything has been cleared. If you feel anxious or want to finish it off earlier, you may opt for medicines or surgery.

b) Medical treatment involves taking tablets by mouth and putting them into the vagina as tablets. These allow the entrance of the uterus (cervix) to open and pass out the pregnancy. This usually is a two-step process and may be associated with some pain and bleeding. At times pain or bleeding may be heavy and you may have to use pain killer or require hospital admission.

c) Surgical treatment involves undergoing a small operation under general or local anaesthetic. The cervix is gently opened with the help of instruments and the pregnancy tissue is removed by a suction device. You may be given tablets to swallow before the surgery to soften the cervix and make the surgery safer. Surgical treatment is more successful in short term for complete removal of tissue but some time side effects like bleeding, infection, need for a repeat surgery due to in complete removal of products and rarely additional surgery due to perforation of the uterus may be required.
